The house was built in 1905 near Woodlawn Cemetery in West Palm Beach, as a home for the cemetery's gatekeeper and a place where funerals were prepared. It later belonged to Karl Riddle, the city's first city manager, and took his name.
By 1980 the house was due to be demolished. Instead it was taken apart, moved to Yesteryear Village, rebuilt and restored.
The legends
The legend centres on Joseph, a worker employed at the house in the 1920s, whose death in the attic is said to be the source of the haunting. His presence is described as angry and aimed at men, with stories of objects thrown and men pushed.
The house's early years as a place where funerals were prepared have added other ghosts — footsteps, voices and figures at the windows — and workers restoring it after the move said the activity grew worse.
Fact or legend?
The Riddle House's history is documented; the story of Joseph is local legend that has not been confirmed in records. The house's reputation spread through television, including a 2009 episode of Ghost Adventures.
Visiting
The house stands in Yesteryear Village at the South Florida Fairgrounds, which opens it during events and seasonal tours, including in October. Check the fairgrounds' calendar.
