Bhangarh was founded in the late 16th century by Raja Bhagwant Das of Amber for his son Madho Singh, a general of the Mughal emperor Akbar. The town flourished for about a century, with a bazaar, mansions and temples to Shiva and Hanuman that still stand.
By the 18th century Bhangarh was in decline, and a famine in 1783 is often said to have emptied what remained. Today the site is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India, whose signboard at the entrance prohibits staying inside before sunrise and after sunset.
The legends
The best-known legend tells of a tantric sorcerer, Singhia, who fell in love with the beautiful Princess Ratnavati. He tried to bewitch her with an enchanted oil, but she saw through the trick and poured it onto a boulder, which rolled down and crushed him. Dying, he cursed the town, and soon afterwards, the story goes, everyone in it perished.
Another version blames an ascetic, Guru Balu Nath, who allowed the town to be built on one condition: that no building's shadow ever fell on his retreat. When a ruler raised his palace too high, its shadow touched the hermitage and the town was doomed. Visitors speak of feeling watched, of sudden chills and of voices among the ruins at dusk.
Fact or legend?
The ruins are genuine and so is the sunset rule — but sunrise-to-sunset hours are standard at protected monuments across India, not a unique ghost warning. The curses are folklore; war, the rise of nearby towns and famine are the likelier causes of Bhangarh's decline.
Visiting
Bhangarh is open from sunrise to sunset and makes a day trip from Jaipur or Alwar, about two to three hours away by road. It lies on the edge of the Sariska Tiger Reserve.
